  BUGS, BEASTS, AND BRAVERY Why We Must Stop Passing Our Insect Phobias to the Next Generation The classroom was quiet during free-play, until a tiny garden spider drifted down from the ceiling on a single thread of silk. Instantly, the atmosphere shifted. One child gasped, another scrambled backward, and a third looked up at me, wide-eyed, waiting for my reaction. If I had screamed, jumped, or swatted it away, a room full of three – four year olds would have instantly internalized a lifelong lesson that ‘ Spiders are dangerous enemies.’ Instead, I leaned in closer, lowered my voice to a theatrical whisper, and said, "Wow, look at that incredible engineer. She is looking for a safe place to build her web." Within seconds, the panic dissolved into a huddle of curious minds eager to observe. As an Early Years educator, I witness this daily.
